Concerning Villians

When it comes to villains, to make a truly great one you need to give them a tragedy. You need some back-story that explains, or at least hides the seed, to their evilness. Something horrible in which the world wronged them. The reason for this is so you give that final speech and force the hero to pause, if only for a second, before pulling the trigger. Then, in the end, you wonder if it was the right thing to do and you'll never be able to take it back.

Said and done, even with the villain dead, they haunt you for eternity as a nagging doubt that maybe, just maybe, things could have turned out different. And that doubt is the true evil.
